Torre del Mar in the Axarquia Spain |
Torre del Mar is actually on the coast, however it was decided to include this because it is the nearest large shopping centre to Villa Alta mobile home development. It is about a 40 minute drive from the Park and has a population of 20,000
The town lies in a plain surrounded by fields of crops, sugar cane was the main cultivation but more and more farmers are converting to mangoes, avocados, kiwis and salad crops as demand increases There are many market gardens here and large hypermarkets.
There are wide sandy beaches and a long promenade with views along the coast and of the hills and mountains behind dotted with white villages. To the east there is the fishing port and marina of La Caleta de Velez.
Torre del Mar has a lot of atmosphere and local flavour with numerous shops, restaurants, including some very good fish and seafood restaurants and bars. There is a 500 metre seafront stretch which is a continual line of bars and discotheques which are open until 6.00h every morning in the summer and at weekends during the winter.
Another stretch of the seafront there’s a summer night market open until 3.00h every morning. In July and August the town is a holiday venue to maily Spanish tourists, although the ex pat presence is making itself known.
The town takes its name - Tower of the Sea from the many watch towers that used to guard the coast in Roman and Moorish times.
