Seville is capital of Andalucia and Spain's fourth largest city and was the center of Spanish exploration and trade in the 15th and 16th centuries.
It is a city with soaring summer temperatures which can approach 50ºC on occasions, many of the Spanish cannot stand the heat in the height of the summer and retire to their holiday homes on the coast.
The newest of Seville's sights were built for Expo '92 with a new theme park called Isla Mágica. Holy Week processions and the April festival in the Spring are when Seville really comes alive.
Seville has a strong individual identity, its popular quarters such as Santa Cruz are as interesting as its many monuments and old buildings.
There is the Alcazar, the beautiful Moorish castle palace and the Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold), an old bastion in the Moorish walls of the city. Then there's the Gothic cathedral which is the third largest in Europe. This is where the tomb of Christopher Columbus lays.
The city is credited with the invention of Tapas and has more than a thousand bars where the choice of food is unlimited, from seafood to ham and sausage and from vegetable to cheese.
It's a tradition and a way of life, the Sevillians make a meal of them, moving from bar to bar and trying one dish at a time.
