The region is set on an enormous platform known as the meseta.
León is the most northern province of the region Castilla y León and geographically is one of the most diverse provinces in the whole of Spain.
One of Leon's glories is the Cathedral, one of the finest in Europe having been constructed from the 13th century for a period of 200 years till it's completion.
Politically, the province of León falls within the region of Castile and León much to the distaste of some of the population. You may even experience evidence of a local regionalist movement seeking independence from Castile, there is however no real radical nationalist party.
Modern León's most important economic sector is tourism.
Among its unusual features are towers and steeples where ironically no attempt was made to make them match! It has more than 250 stained glass windows including a large rose window, in total there is over 1800 square metres of glass.
