The Canary Islands, Las Islas Canarias
The Canary Islands are a volcanic area of Spain and located off the north western coast of Africa, some 1500 kilometres south east of the Spanish mainland.
The landscapes are quite diverse with volcanic scenes, dense forests, high volcanoes, and barren desert land. They have an excellent all year round climate, which is warm and dry with plenty of sunshine. This and the beautiful beaches, ensures that the Canary islands are an all year round destination for tourists.
Seven islands make up the Canaries which are divided into two provinces, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, this includes Tenerife, La Palma, Gomera and Hierro, and Las Palmas, which includes the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
Gran Canaria has marvellous resorts with entertainment and great beaches. The sand dunes of Maspolomas are a must see and you can take a camel ride to enjoy the scenery.
Fuerteventura is much quieter with sandy beaches and a relaxing atmosphere.
Lanzarote, where the volcanic activity has sculptured fantastic lunar landscapes. The most amazing of these sites is the Timanfaya National Park.
La Palma, has the beautiful national park Caldera de Taburiente and other attractions, the Spanish Colonial architecture of the chief town, Santa Cruz de la Palma.
La Gomeras' Garajony National Park is the main attraction here with a dense forest.
El Hierro is a sparsely populated island with a rugged landscape.
Tenerife has the highest peak in Spain, Mount Teide, which is 3718 metres high. Surrounding the volcanic crater is the Teide National Park, in addition to the natural beauty Tenerife is well known for it's lively resorts and popular nightlife.
