Avila

Ávila was the birth place of St. Theresa who lived here in the 16th century.

There are two kilometers of medieval walls and ninety towers which completely surround the old town.

It was Alfonso VI who built the walls after his conquest of the town in 1090 and he used the Moorish prisoners to complete the task.

There is a cathedral, many churches as well as convents and monasteries.

The nuns of the Convent Santa María de Jesúis and the Monastery of Santa Anathe make delicious sweets, biscuits, chocolate and cakes. You don't have to go to the convents to buy them as all the local shops selling things typical of Avila have them.
