Almeria City and Province
Almeria is situated on the south east coast of Spain, it was once a Moorish capital and was said to rival Granada. It has a magnificent Moorish castle called the Alcazaba, which is probably the best remaining example of a Moorish military building in Spain.
Other places of interest in Almeria include a cathedral, built in the 1500īs and the cave quarter, Barrio de la Chanca.
Almeria has lots of beaches and the warm weather arrives sooner in the year than the rest of mainland Spain, which is worth taking into account for an early or late season holiday.
Despite its rugged landscape with a shortage of fertile soil Almeria has managed to become an important growth area, well known for its oranges and grapes, most of which are exported. As you drive through you will see an endless sea of polythene tunnels, crammed with produce, the area is almost totally dependent on this industry.
The Tabernas dessert is where they filmed the Spaghetti westerns as well as Lawrence of Arabia so it's well worth a visit, some of the original film sets still remain here.
